Interview with Ed L. Gilley concerning his experiences as owner of a grocery store in Miller Grove, Texas. Gilley discusses his family background, his father's employment experiences in Louisiana, farming in Hopkins County, Texas in the 1920s and 1930s, his purchase of a building and the establishment of his hardware and grocery store in Miller Grove in 1933, the merchandise, the relocation of the building in Miller Grove in 1939, and credit practices. He also talks about the competition in Miller Grove, his appointment as postmaster for Miller Grove, bookkeeping practices, his difficulties in obtaining merchandise during World War II, barter practices at the store, the factors involved in the loss of his business, as well as gasoline sale at the store, the sale of the business, cattle raising, a typical day's work, and the Miller Grove community.
